Students seeking secondary certification may choose Language Arts Composite as a teaching field. The following courses are required: ENG 164, ENG 165, ENG 265, ENG 275 or 285 or 295, ENG 373, ENG 380 or 431, ENG 464, an approved ENG elective at 400 level; RDG 235, RDG 285, RDG 385, RDG 370, RDG 390, RDG 471, 475 or BSL 236; JRN 131, 3 hours approved JRN elective; SCM 384; 3 hours approved SCM elective.
Students seeking elementary certification may choose the Reading/Language Arts Composite Specialization. The following courses are required: ENG 164, ENG 165, ENG literature (200 level or higher), ENG 372 or 373; 9 hours of advanced ENG electives (at least one 400 level course recommended); RDG 235, RDG 285, RDG 370, RDG 385, RDG 390, RDG 393, RDG 431, RDG 471 and 3 hours from the following: LS 362, RDG 392, 3 hours advanced RDG, or BSL 236.
Students seeking secondary certification may have a second teaching field (minor) in reading by completing the following courses: RDG 235, RDG 285, RDG 370, RDG 385, RDG 390, RDG 471 or RDG 475, RDG 392, LS 362.
RDG 031D DEVELOPMENTAL READING. An intense study of vocabulary, text organization, comprehension and other reading skills. Credit in this course will not be allowed to count toward graduation or computation of grade point averages or classification of students by hours completed. Students failing the Reading section of the TASP must enroll in this course.
*RDG 235 LITERACY PROCESSES OF CULTURALLY AND LINGUISTICALLY DIVERSE POPULATIONS. The focus of this course is an introduction to language acquisition and development including an awareness of social and cultural differences. There will be special emphasis on instructional applications for teaching. Credit 3.
RDG 285 LITERACY AS A FOUNDATION FOR LEARNING. An opportunity for students to examine their personal literacy development and their philosophical assumptions underlying literacy instruction, in order to build a basis for the theories and practices provided in the advanced courses. Credit 3.
RDG 370 THE TEACHING OF READING. The fundamental concepts and principles of reading instruction, focus on the developmental stages of reading. Word attack, comprehension, study strategies and other aspects of a balanced literacy program are learned and applied. Must be taken concurrently with RDG 390. Prerequisite: EED 374. Field experiences in PK-12 public schools included in this course. Advance Departmental Approval Required. Credit 3.
RDG 385 CAUSES AND REMEDIATION OF READING DISABILITIES. The focus of this course is an exploration of the physical, sociological and psychological causes of individual differences in literacy learning. Students will mentor an individual child planning assessment and instructional procedures for reading/writing improvement. Prerequisites: RDG 235, RDG 370, RDG 390. Credit 3.
*RDG 390 THE TEACHING OF LANGUAGE ARTS. Focus on the developmental stages of writing and the interrelated language processes of listening, speaking and reading and writing. Preservice teaches will explore theories and instructional practices in the elementary school language arts program. Must be taken concurrently with RDG 370. Prerequisite: EED 374. Field experiences in PK-12 public schools included in this course. Advance Departmental Approval Required. Credit 3.
*RDG 392 CONTENT AREA READING AND WRITING. Students will learn to determine pupils' needs and abilities in content area reading and writing through the use of assessment instruments and will plan instructional strategies appropriate to their needs within specific secondary teaching fields. Prerequisites: Admission to educator preparation program required. Field experiences in PK-12 public schools included in this course. Credit 3.
*RDG 393 EMERGENT AND BEGINNING LITERACY. Language and cognitive development, listening, speaking, reading, and writing theories and instructional practices with children from birth to grade 3. Credit 3.
RDG 431 LITERACY ASSESSMENT AND INSTRUCTION. Students will administer and interpret varied assessment tools as well as select and implement appropriate instructional techniques to plan and conduct effective classroom literacy instruction. Prerequisites: RDG 370, RDG 390. Admission to educator preparation program required. Field experiences in PK-12 public schools included in this course. Credit 3.
RDG 471 READING IN THE MIDDLE GRADES. This course focuses on the uniqueness of middle grade students, middle school structures and explores literacy theories and activities that meet these needs and structures. Prerequisites: RDG 370, RDG 390 or instructor's permission. Credit 3.
RDG 475 INDIVIDUAL PROBLEMS IN READING. Designed for students interested in extending conceptual knowledge in literacy issues. This course addresses special topics and independent study related to methodologies, curriculum, assessment, and language processes. Advance Departmental Approval Required. Credit 3.
