Admission, Retention and Exit Requirements for Certification as a Secondary School Teacher
ADMISSION, RETENTION AND EXIT REQUIREMENTS for
CERTIFICATION AS AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TEACHER
I. DEGREE PLAN A. Requirements for Filing an Official Degree Plan 1. Must have completed a minimum of 54 semester hours with at least 15 semester hours completed in residence at Sam Houston State University.

2. Must satisfy the TASP Test standards for certification.

3. Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or greater on all college work attempted (transfer and SHSU combined).

4. Must have a 2.5 GPA or greater in specialization.

5. Must have completed ENG 164 and ENG 165 with a grade of C or better in each.

6. Must have completed MTH 184 and MTH 185 with a grade of C or better in each.

B. Process

Submit the following to the Chair of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction (Teacher Education Center Building, Room 252):

1. Application for Degree Plan

2. Standards of Professional Conduct for Elementary Preservice Teachers.

3. Sam Houston State University Elementary Education Program.

II. EDUCATOR PREPARATION PROGRAM A. Requirements for Admission to Educator Preparation Program 1. Must have completed a minimum of 54 hours with at least 15 semester hours completed in residence at Sam Houston State University.

2. Must satisfy the TASP Test standards.

3. Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or greater on all college work attempted (transfer and SHSU combined).

4. Must have a 2.5 GPA or greater in specialization.

5. Must have a grade of C or better and a 2.5 GPA or greater in all Elementary Education courses (SPD 231, EED 374, RDG 370, and RDG 390).

6. An undergraduate student must have filed a degree plan. A post graduate or certification only student must have a certification plan on file in the certification office. (TEC 212).

B. Process for Admission

Submit the following to the Associate Dean, College of Education and Applied Science (Teacher Education Center Building, TEC 213):

1. Application for admission.

2. Transcript which includes all college work attempted.

3. Copy of degree plan or certification plan.

4. Evidence of satisfaction of TASP Test standards.

 
III. ELEMENTARY METHODS A. Requirements for Admission to Elementary Methods 1. An undergraduate student must be admitted to the Educator Preparation Program. Post graduate or certification-only student must have a certification plan on file in the Certification Office (TEC 212).

2. Must have completed all the academic foundation courses (66 hours), all the major academic support courses (15 hours), and at least 18 hours in your specialization.

3. Must have completed MTH 184 and MTH 185 with a grade of C or better in each. (MTH 162 completed prior to the fall semester 1995 with a grade of C or better will substitute for MTH 185).

4. Must have completed ENG 164 and ENG 165 with a grade of C or better in each.

5. Must have completed EED 374, SPD 231, LS 361, SCM 384, RDG 370 and RDG 390 with a grade of C or better in each course.

6. Must have a cumulative (transfer and SHSU combined) GPA of 2.5 or greater.

7. Must have a 2.5 GPA or greater in your specialization.

8. If seeking a Spanish Specialization or Bilingual Endorsement, must take and pass the Texas Oral Proficiency Test (TOPT) before the beginning of the methods classes.

B. Process for Admission

Submit the following to the Chair of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction (Teacher Education Center Building, TEC 252):
 

1. Application for elementary methods.

2. Copy of degree plan or certification plan.

3. Transcript which includes all college work attempted.

4. Evidence of satisfaction of TASP Test standards.

5. Acceptance letter from Educator Preparation Program.

 
Due Dates: Submit application by the last Friday of February if you plan to be in elementary methods in the fall semester and by the last Friday of September if you plan to be in elementary methods in the spring.

IV. STUDENT TEACHING

A. Requirements for Admission to Student Teaching Program 1. Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or greater on all college work attempted, including a grade of C or better in ENG 164, ENG 165, MTH 184, and MTH 185.

2. Must have completed at least 18 semester hours of specialization with 2.5 GPA or greater.

3. Must have completed EED 374, SPD 231, EED 434, EED 435, EED 436, and required RDG courses with a 2.5 GPA or greater and with a grade of C or better in each course.

4. Must have completed all required courses in Bilingual, Early Childhood and Special Education with a GPA of 2.5 or better (as appropriate).

5. Must be eligible for graduation in student teaching semester if student teaching in fall semester. Must be eligible for graduation by the following August if student teaching in the spring semester.

B. Process for Admission

Submit the following to the Director of Field Experiences (Teacher Education Center Building, TEC 241):
 

1. Application for student teaching.

2. Current transcript which includes all college work attempted.

 
Due Dates: Submit application by the last Friday of February if you plan to be in student teaching in the fall semester and by the last Friday of September if you plan to be in student teaching in the spring.

V. CERTIFICATION

A. Requirements for Certification 1. Completion of all course work required for degree and certification with: a. Overall GPA of 2.5 or greater

b. Completed 24 hours in specialization, including 12 advanced hours with a GPA of 2.5 or greater

c. Must have a GPA of 2.5 and grade of C or better in professional education courses

d. Successful completion of student teaching requirements

2. Must satisfy the TASP Test standard and have passed the ExCET tests required by the State Board for Educator Certification.
B. Process

Submit the following to the Certification Analyst (Teacher Education Center Building, TEC 212):

1. Application for Texas Teaching Certificate

2. Required fee in form of money order or cashier's check made payable to: Texas Board for Educator Certification.

3. Transcript which indicates the degree has been granted and all work required for the certification has been completed.

NOTE: Recommendations for certification are subject to Criminal Records check by the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC).

A. Requirements for Filing an Official Degree Plan 1. Student becomes well established within the major, but not later than the beginning of the junior year.

2. At least 15 semester hours completed in residence at Sam Houston State University.

B. Process An official degree plan must be established by the student seeking to become certified as a secondary school teacher through the major department, the minor department and the office of the academic dean of the major.
II. EDUCATOR PREPARATION PROGRAM
A. Requirements for Admission to Educator Preparation Program
1. Must have completed a minimum of 54 semester hours with at least 15 semester hours in residence at Sam Houston. The 54 hours must include 6 hours of freshman English with a grade of C or better in each course.

2. Must satisfy the TASP Test standards.

3. Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or greater on all college work attempted (transfer and SHSU courses).

4. GPA of 2.5 or greater in both major and minor.

5. Must have a grade of C or better and a 2.5 GPA or greater in Secondary Education courses (SED 374, 383).

6. An undergraduate student must have filed a degree plan. A post graduate or certification-only student must have a certification plan file in the certification office (TEC 212).

B. Process
Submit the following to the Associate Dean, College of Education and Applied Science (Teacher Education Center Building, TEC 213): 1. Application for admission.

2. Transcript which includes all college work attempted.

3. Copy of degree plan or certification plan.

4. Evidence of satisfaction of TASP Test standards.

III. SECONDARY METHODS
A. Requirements for Admission to Secondary Methods
1. An undergraduate student must be admitted to the Educator Preparation Program. Post graduate or certification-only student must have a certification plan on file in the Certification Office (TEC 212).

2. Must have a cumulative (transfer and SHSU combined) GPA of 2.5 or greater.

3. Must have a 2.5 or greater in both the major and the minor.

4. Must have completed SED 374 and SED 383 with a C or better in each course.

5. If seeking certification to teach Spanish, must take the Texas Oral Proficiency Test (TOPT) prior to acceptance into methods.

B. Process for Admission   Submit the following to the Chair of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction (Teacher Education Center Building, TEC 252): 1. Application for secondary methods.

2. Copy of degree plan or certification plan.

3. Transcript which includes all college work attempted.

4. Evidence of satisfaction of TASP Test standards.

5. Acceptance letter from Educator Preparation Program.

Due Dates: Submit application by the last Friday in February if you plan to be in secondary methods in the fall semester and by the last Friday in September if you plan to be in secondary methods in the spring.
IV. STUDENT TEACHING
A. Requirements for Admission to Student Teaching Program
1. Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or greater on all college work attempted, including a grade of C or better in ENG 164, ENG 165.
2. Must have completed at least 18 semester hours of teaching field(s) with 2.5 GPA or greater.

3. Must have completed SED 374, SED 383, SED 392, SED 394, SED 464 with no grade below C.

4. Must be ready for graduation in student teaching semester if student teaching in fall semester. Must be ready to graduate the following summer session if student teaching in the spring semester.

B. Process for Admission
Submit the following to the Director of Field Experiences (Teacher Education Center Building, TEC 241): 1. Application for student teaching.

2. Current transcript which includes all college work attempted.

Due Dates: Submit application by the last Friday in February for student teaching in the fall semester and by the last Friday in September for student teaching in the spring semester (Teacher Education Center Building, TEC 241).
V. CERTIFICATION
A. Requirements for Certification 1. Completion of all course work required for degree and certification with: a. Overall GPA of 2.5 or greater

b. Completed 24 hours in teaching fields, including 12 advanced hours with a GPA of 2.5 or greater

c. Must have a GPA of 2.5 and grade of C or better in professional education courses

d. Successful completion of student teaching requirements

Note: Recommendations for certification are subject to criminal records check by the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC).
Grade point averages for Admission, Retention, and Exit Requirements will be computed on exactly the same basis as designated under "Scholastic Requirements" in this catalogue.

In accordance with Article 6252-13c, Texas Civil Statutes, the Commissioner of Education may suspend or revoke a teaching certificate, or refuse to issue a teaching certificate for a person who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor for a crime directly related to the duties and responsibilities of the teaching profession. All potential certificate applicants with criminal felony or misdemeanor convictions should contact the Associate Dean, College of Education and Applied Science when applying for the educator preparation program to seek clarification of their certification status.

In addition to the requirements listed above, an applicant for a certificate must be of good moral character, be a citizen or be in the process of becoming a naturalized citizen of the United States, and believe in and uphold the Constitutions of the United States and the state of Texas.

PROVISIONAL CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENTS

Provisional Elementary. The approved program is listed as "Curriculum: Major in Academic Studies" in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction section of this catalogue. The certificate qualifies an individual to teach Grades 1-8, with the exception of the Early Childhood Education endorsement which certifies an individual to teach Pre-K through Grade 8.

Provisional Secondary. The approved program is listed under the Department of Curriculum and Instruction section of this catalogue. See the teaching field sections of this catalogue for specific course requirements for each teaching field. The description of the composite programs in English/Language Arts, Science and Social Studies are found in the College of Arts and Sciences section of this catalogue.

Provisional All-Levels. See the Art, Music and Kinesiology sections of this catalogue for descriptions of this program. The professional education requirements are: EED 374, SED 383, SED 392, SED 394, SED 464, SED 480, EED 491, and SED 496. All-level kinesiology (physical education) majors must have a second teaching field of 24 semester hours but the individual is not qualified to teach that field unless certified as a secondary teacher.

Provisional Vocational. See the Agriculture and Home Economics sections of this catalogue for descriptions of these programs. A student may qualify for the Vocational Industrial Education Certificate by completing high school, five years work experience, and six required courses in Vocational Trades and Industry. The student may also qualify with a bachelor's degree, three years work experience, and six required courses in Vocational Trades and Industry. ENDORSEMENTS FOR PROVISIONAL CERTIFICATES

Bilingual Education. Students seeking to add the Bilingual Education endorsement to the Provisional Elementary certification should follow the approved program listed as "Curriculum: Interdisciplinary Academic Major leading to Bilingual and Elementary Certification" in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction section of this catalogue.

Early Childhood Education. Students seeking to add the Early Childhood Education endorsement to the Provisional Elementary certification should follow the approved program listed as "Early Childhood and Elementary Certification" in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction section of this catalogue. The Early Childhood endorsement certifies an individual to teach Pre-K through Grade 8.

English As A Second Language. The ESL endorsement may be added to the Provisional Elementary Certificate. The professional development sequence for the ESL endorsement consists of BSL 233, BSL 236, BSL 477, BSL 478, plus student teaching BSL 488.

Special Education. Student seeking to add the Special Education endorsement to the Provisional Elementary certification should follow the approved program listed as "Special Education and Elementary Certification" in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction section of this catalogue.

 

CHANGES IN TEACHER CERTIFICATION

The specific type of provisional certificate to be issued upon the completion of the undergraduate programs described in this catalogue will be those in effect at the time a student completes all the requirements for certification.
